Another large bird kill reported, this time in Louisiana
                                  By Brett Michael Dykes
                                Tuesday January 4, 2011

After reports of thousands of dead red-winged blackbirds falling from the sky in Beebe, Arkansas --
along with reports of a
massive fish kill in the same area -- raised concerned eyebrows across the
land, another bird kill is being reported in a small town near Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Reports the Baton Rouge Advocate:

State biologists are trying to determine what led to the deaths of the estimated 500 red-winged
blackbirds and starlings on La. 1 just down the road from Pointe Coupee Central High School.

The discovery of the dead birds — some of which were lying face down, clumped in groups, while
others were face up with their wings outstretched and rigid legs pointing upward — comes just three
days after more than 3,000 blackbirds rained down from the sky in Beebe, Ark. ... In Louisiana,
biologists with the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries spent part of the day Monday scooping
up some of the birds in Pointe Coupee Parish to be sent for testing at labs in Georgia and Wisconsin.

Officials in Arkansas say that the thousands of dead birds and fish discovered there over the
weekend died of natural causes. As you might expect, others are insinuating that something more
sinister is going on.

I was reading a story like this last night, probably the same story.... note that the wildlife "experts" say it's
normal for this kind of thing to happen

Wildlife experts in Arkansas believe high-altitude lightning or hail killed more than 1,000 blackbirds that
literally fell from the sky on New Year's Eve.

The statement noted that such phenomenon was not particularly rare and has been reported in other
parts of the world.

Mystery as hundreds of dead starlings found on Somerset street
(England)
Jo Steele - 10th March, 2010

A nurse got the fright of her life when she arrived home to find hundreds of dead starlings littering the
ground.

Julie Knight said she found more than 100 corpses in her front garden alone – which is just 3.6m (12ft)
long.

‘They literally seemed to just fall out of the sky. About 70 were dead straight away,’ said the 53-year-old.

‘It was like something out of a horror film – like Hitchcock’s The Birds – it was absolutely terrifying.’

The starlings had blood coming from their beaks and many had their feet already curled up in Sunday’s
bizarre event, which has baffled experts.

Lloyd Scott from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said they might have flown into something
but admitted: ‘This is one of the oddest things I’ve ever heard about.’ He added: ‘When flying around in
a murmuration – the coordinated sky-dance of the starlings – they relate each movement to the seven
birds closest to them.

‘They are hardwired into doing this and on instinct they stay away from each other.’

Eyewitnesses to the incident in Coxley, Somerset, are adamant the birds did not collide with each other
or fly into a structure such as a conservatory.

Ms Knight called RSPCA officers, who saved just six birds, put dozens of others that were beyond help to
sleep and collected the dead. Vets from the RSPCA and the RSPB are studying the starlings and
awaiting toxicology results.

Over 1,500 dead birds found on Azov sea island
Around 1,500 dead birds have been found on Ukraine's Bolshoi
Dzendzik Island near the Berdyansk spit on the Azov Sea, the
Ukrainian emergencies ministry said on Saturday.

Most of the birds were cormorants, but a large number of herring gulls were also found.

Specialists from the local veterinary office have taken samples for laboratory testing to establish the
cause of the death of the birds.

Mystery as dead birds fall from the sky over Western Australia
Anne Barrowclough, South-East Asia Editor
Dead birds are falling from the sky in Australia for the second time in seven months, raising fears of a
possible public health threat.

At least 200 seagulls have been found dead in Perth's popular beachside suburbs of Woodman Point
and Henderson this week, baffling local authorities.

Post-mortem examinations have failed to determine the cause of the birds' deaths. Last December 5,000
birds died in the coastal town of Esperance, 500 km south of Perth, after being poisoned by lead
carbonate blowing through the town as it was being exported through Esperance Port.

The latest incident of dropping birds has led to a major investigation of local industries but government
officials admit they are at a loss to know what is killing the gulls. A Department of Health spokesman
admitted they could not rule out a risk to public health until the cause of the birds' deaths had been
established.

When the Esperance birds began dying, tests showed that local children and adults had potentially
dangerous levels of lead in their blood. A local company, Magellan Metals, escaped prosecution over
the way it handled the transportation of lead through the town, but fears remain over the potential threat
to humans.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DoEC) believes the latest deaths may have been
caused by a chemical or pollutant. The birds were found on Monday and Tuesday near water outfall
pipes at Woodman Point, south of Fremantle and at nearby Henderson which has a large boat-building
industry. Water and sediment samples have been taken from the area for testing.

Kevin Morrison, from the DoEC, said the birds appeared to die a quick and painless death.

"The birds, when they are showing signs of having been poisoned become a bit wobbly on their feet,
they sit down and within 10 to 15 minutes they're dead," he told the Australian Broadcasting
Coproration. He said it was particularly puzzling that the deaths were confined to seagulls. In Esperance,
wattle birds, yellow throated miners and honey-eaters died.

Although many of the birds were found near the outflow pipes, Mr Morrison said the birds may already
have ingested something toxic at a rubbish or landfall site before going there for water as they died.

The beach at Woodman Point, a popular sailing and fishing area, has been closed as a precaution until
further notice. Officials do not expect the test results on the birds for a week.

Colin Andrews Comment:

There is no question that the
deaths of large numbers of
creatures like this is serious and
demands our attention and
investigation but I also think that
because the media at their whim
have focused like they do upon a
story, suddenly in turn it pulls
many reports together which
would not normally be known
about or reported. In other words
I think many of these are
happening all of the time.

It gives the impression that
something new just took place
when that might not be the case.

All that said, these are terrible
reports and demand a serious
approach unlike the
irresponsible and childish
CNN
report I watched two days ago on
The Situation Room program.
Stupid music playing and
incentive and totally uncaring
comments being made as they
made fun of a cute end of
program piece, ending with the
words: "The ones that know what
happened aren't talking" - so
incentive but oh so typical.  When
will the general media stop the
insistent trivial talking and get on
with doing real in depth
investigations?

As Ive said before, Wikileaks
would never have been
necessary had they been doing
so.

More than 100 dead birds found off Calif. highway

Tue Jan 11, 9:21 am ET
GEYSERVILLE, Calif. – California wildlife officials are trying to figure out what caused the death of
more than 100 birds found clustered together just off Highway 101.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports that California Highway Patrol officers found the dead birds
near the roadway on Saturday and called in the state Department of Fish and Game to investigate.

The officers who found the birds described them as small with brown and black feathers. They were
intact and had not been shot.

The reports come as other, larger bird deaths have been reported in Arkansas, Louisiana and other
states.

Scientists say mass die-offs of wildlife happen regularly, and are usually unrelated and unreported.

Comment by Colin Andrews: Which scientists? and what is their evidence?  To say this means
they know the causes.

Wisconsin farmer shocked to discover 200 dead cows; officials
think cattle had deadly virus

By Nina Mandell
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Sunday, January 16th 2011, 5:38 PM

First it was birds in Arkansas. Then it was fish in Maryland. And now authorities are trying to figure
out what killed 200 cows in a pasture in Stockton, Wisc.

The owner of the cattle told sheriff's deputies he suspects the cows died from a virus – most likely IBR
(infectious bovine rhinotracheitis) or BVD (bovine virus diarrhea), which can cause respiratory and
reproductive problems, the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune reported.

Samples of the dead animals were sent to Madison to be tested,
but officials said other animals
and people in the area will likely not be affected by whatever killed the cows.
The Portage
County Humane Society is handling the investigation, the newspaper said.

Attempts by local media to reach the unlucky farmer were unsuccessful.

The death of the cows is just the latest in mass animal deaths in the US.

Last week, an estimated 300 birds were found out the side of a highway in Alabama. Experts told
WAAY-TV that a large vehicle, most likely a tractor trailer was responsible for the deaths.

The attention to large-scale animal deaths began on New Year's Eve when thousands of black birds
fell from the sky in Arkansas, prompting speculation about everything from mass poisoning to a sign
of the apocalypse.

In reality, officials said, the bird deaths were probably a result of a change weather conditions.

"Not to worry," Harvard biologist E.O. Wilson told the AP earlier this month. "These are not portents
that the world is about to come to an end.

200 dead cows found on town of Stockton farm
By Cara Spoto • For the Daily Tribune • January 15, 2011

TOWN OF STOCKTON -- The Portage County Humane Society is trying to figure out what caused
200 cows in the town of Stockton to die.

According to a Portage County Sheriff's Department news release, deputies were dispatched to the
town just after 1 p.m. Friday after they were notified of numerous dead cows lying in a field in the
8000 block of Fourth Avenue.

The owner of the cattle allegedly told deputies that he had been working with a local veterinarian and
suspected that the animals died from the either the IBR or BVD virus.

According to Cattletoday.info, IBR -- infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, or red nose -- is an acute,
contagious virus that usually occurs in the air passages of a cow's head or its windpipe.

Cattle of all ages that have not been vaccinated or have not recovered from the disease are
susceptible to IBR, the website states.

BVD -- Bovine Virus Diarrhea -- can cause numerous problems, according to the site, such as
damage to a cow's digestive and immune systems, pneumonia, abortions, calf deformities and other
symptoms.

Samples of the dead animals were sent to Madison for testing.

Neither the sheriff's department sergeant who wrote the news release nor the humane society officer
who took the farmer's statement could be reached for comment Friday evening when information
about the incident was released to the media.

Attempts to reach a large-animal veterinarian also were unsuccessful at that time.

The investigation is being handled by the Portage County Humane Society.

According to the Portage County Sheriff's department, there is no threat to humans or
other animals.

The Media must start asking the questions - finding the facts.

For example this story has been left on the 'safe shelf' after all officials have said there is no fear of
spread to other cows or creatures!!!!!!
FACTS ARE:

According to the Portage County Sheriff's department, there is no threat to humans or other animals.

======================

Bovine Virus Diarrhea (BVD)

Oral or nasal exposure with virus is the primary mode of transmission of acute disease. Persistently
infected cattle are important in viral transmission because they shed large quantities of virus in their
saliva and nasal secretions. Contact with other cattle undergoing an acute infection is another
important method of viral transmission. Biting insects and artificial insemination with semen
contaminated with virus have been reported to transmit the virus. Because wild ruminants may be
infected with bovine viral diarrhea virus,
there is a possibility that disease may spread from
farm to farm with movement of wildlife.

Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR)

Highly infectious:

Isolate all infected animals immediately to lesson spread of disease. No medicines are
available to treat this disease
.

And so with even a cursory piece of checking we find that the officials have made once again false
statements to the public and the media accepted the BS they gave.

Philippines struggles with mountains of dead fish

Several lakeside towns in the Philippines are struggling to cope with mountains of rotting fish that
were killed by a sudden drop in water temperatures at the weekend.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources says more than 750 tonnes of fish have died since
Friday in Taal Lake near Manila, hitting several towns whose economies are heavily reliant on the
fishing industry.

Scientists say the onset of the rainy season led to a sharp drop in water temperatures that depleted
oxygen levels in the lake.

Most of those killed were milk fish and tilapia being commercially bred in cages along the lake's
shores.

"There are just so many dead fish," said Zenaida Mendoza, mayor of Talisay, one of the worst
affected towns.
